#2454 The Cleveland Arms, Brighton – Leaving the car outside the Park View we spotted the On Inn sign on the walk to the pub where it was good to see Ann-R-Key back in play on another mizzly day, returning after 9 months up north which had her discovering the local hash at Cockermouth one week before her return. Setting off through Blakers Park, hare threw all with a left on Preston Drove down to Osborne Road and up to the steps down, at the bottom of which was the first fishhook back up. Worth reminding folk, after I was chastised by Shirker Ninezing for stopping at Psychlepath, that you only have to return to the final r*nner, not the Numpty fishhookers who went too far! Up Balfour, trail continued down into Dorothy Stringer (2nd FH) and along Surrenden Crescent (3rd FH) for a first taste of earth in Surrenden Field. Crossing the A23 we continued up Tongdean to Withdean, then headed N to find a narrow, slippery, and entirely unnecessary side path, that was almost the undoing of SN, who had a run in with an errant fence! A steep set of steps took us up to Colebrook where a right at the check would lead to another FH, followed by a left and more steps, downhill this time where the hare was heard to mutter, I don’t know where I am! Yet more up steps were encountered at the top of Valley Close, and of course, another FH. Left on Tongdean Rise led us into Withdean Woods for a slippy slidy meander down through to a well placed regroup on Withdean Road. It was a few minutes wait for the back marker, Psychlepath being looked after by the hare and SN (again!), which 20/20 hindsight suggests would have been well served with a beer, but at least the rain had held off and it wasn’t too cold. Splashing along Station Road via a final FH, pack started to disintegrate on the on inn as we re-crossed the A23 up Harrington Road and through to Preston Drove to climb back up to the pub.
Fed & beered, circle opened with the sad news that Dynorod (Lawrence) had passed away from bowel cancer on Saturday. An occasional visitor to BH7, he had nevertheless clocked up 35 runs according to the web stats (but probably more with joint r*ns where he would have listed as OCH3 or EGH3), his last hash with us being in September last year. A well received but hilly hash saw Nasty Nips rewarded inevitably to the Grand Old Duke (and how could we not use that number in the week that TAFKAP Andrew got detained at his dad’s pleasure). Who Killed Kenny usually times her arrival meticulously to just after the hash has set off, but when she only had to come from Elm Grove you have to ask if she only does it for the beer! Joined by SN for his tangle, they downed to They’re Alright, before Little Swinger and Wilds Thing were brought in for an on-trail spat. That ‘s what the circle is for, but you don’t mess with LS, and going around all pious telling several hashers they’re twats for using road shoes on a town r*n, then getting virtually every check wrong (along, incidentally, with LS!) invites the Numpty mug, most of the contents being spilled on himself. Tripsy then confirmed next week’s hash before the toast and Just Naomi & Hash Gomi dished out M&S bouquets and sarnies! In the usual load of old bull talk, a few were surprised by the old pub quiz question from 2001: A Space Odyssey, where did HAL the computers name come from, the answer being a one letter step from IBM, prompting talk about the recent WH Smith rebranding which used similar thinking to come up with TG Jones. If they’d gone the other way, they could well have ended up with a proper Yorkshire name: Y I Patel. Nurse for Bouncer! Another great hash! - Bouncer
