Run #2398

#2398 - The Stanley Arms, Portslade - Welcome fellow hashers to another re-hash by me (Nasty Nips), and the last hash of January 2025 - where has that month gone? It flew by, just like tonight's hash which was (judging by most people's Strava's) a little shorter than usual. Even the hares weren't sure how long it was, being either 5 miles (from some fancy tech Tripsy Daisy had) or 5 kilometres (from Ride It Baby's OS maps plotting); the truth would undoubtedly be somewhere in between after checks and apparently 8 fishhooks!
And so the hash set of W down Stanley Rd to the trail and a wholly expected check straight away, with true trail quickly called N up to the A270 / Old Shoreham Rd, where trail would continue straight over and on to Mile Oak Rd and FH#1. A tight squeeze back down the trail would see FRBs back quickly to the front and trail called on left then right up Ridgeway and Highdown Cl, following a footpath back around to the trail and continuing on N around the recreation ground. Left at the trail fork would see the pack literally right on top of Southwick Tunnel before following a zig-zag back downhill to the houses behind Westway Gardens, trail now turning S for a return loop, with FH#2 and FH#3 both encountered only a short while later. Trail followed all the way down to the steps dropping down to Oakdene Crescent and S on Mile Oak Rd, before reaching FH#4 at the top of the hill and FH#5 encountered another few hundred metres later. Turning E onto High St and then immediately S onto Applesham Way and back down to the A270 / Old Shoreham Rd would find the hash headed On Inn down Wolseley Rd, with RIB pointing out a separate trail down Trafalgar Rd for those wanting to swing by Fishtucky, where somehow Wildbush had managed to cadge some free chips but then had to wait ages for Keeps It Up to get back to place their order...
And so, some while later and with the pub decidedly smelling of fish and chips and football on the telly overhead, hash hush was called. Asked what everyone thought of the hash, several called 'short' whilst others called 'too long', and some even moaning about it being 'too hilly'. And so hares RIB and TD were called up with DDs to "Here's to the Hares". Before they could go, they were told to remain there for (1) getting the distance confused, (2) setting the trail on bikes, and (3) getting stuck down a path when setting it! More DDs to "Stupid" this time. Next up, Bonking Queen for arriving literally just as the hash set off (she's always SO lucky with her parking!); DD to "10,9,8". Then, noted as running to the hash were Lily The Pink and NuSSSSnacke, except NSSS had already left and Hash Gomi pointed out that I too had done the same. And so LTP and I (effectively nominated) had DDs to "Get A Life" with LTP amazingly downing it as usual. And finally, it was noted that yesterday (Sunday 26th Jan) was Australia Day and that we would be losing two of our number (Bouncer and Angel) for 10 weeks to Down Under. Bouncer's position as RA would obviously be filled in by BQ and myself, and we just had to look for someone to take over Angel's position of moaning about the hash! DDs to "20 Toes".
Closing out the circle, next week's hash would be noted by On On Don as 'being shiggy filled' and (more importantly) would be from The Farmers @ Scaynes Hill with OOD & Pompette setting the trail. And thus another great hash and the circle was closed with a toast to the hash. - Nasty Nips
