#2476 – On On Don’s big birthday hash, Heathfield – A marvellous celebration of On On Don’s 80th birthday in November had us gathering in his garden (after weaving our way through the rotary hung with past BH7 shirts) for a quick explanation that he’d held it now to take advantage of the nicer seasonal weather and light, and would be generously providing food and drink for us all, hurrah! Moving to the street we were warned of hills and ghylls on trail and pointed left where marks were soon located up a narrow, brambly, nettly twitten. Checks were called quickly until we hit the coppice and Angel had no sooner said that OOD doesn’t do fishhooks than the first group of 4 returned to sweep those of us languishing. At Sandy Cross lane, the move to the east failed as we were called west, before a cunning couple of back-to-back checks required the map-holding Shirker Ninezing’s intervention to get us going. The Cuckoo Trail was inevitable, as is ‘knowing your hare’, and so YT slapped on way too far in the belief that the erudite OOD had forgotten to lay marks while enlightening his co-hares, before the call back to the hidden track by a private gate up to Pook Reed lane. Crossing the A267, hare had managed to find shiggy, and inevitably another FH, before a really lovely trot through Darch’s Wood sometimes even on trail. SN’s steady hand continued to keep us in line until we reached the High Street, where, rumour had it, Shoots Off Early led many on a roady return thus missing a lovely true trail as well as a final FH to the bemusement of those who stayed the course.

Soon full of Spotty Cat’s, sorry, Scotty Totty’s burger, banger and salad spread, and the Downlands ale, circle up introduced the hares OOD, Pompette and Beat the Barman, along with SN, for the hares song, and a further thank you to ST and OOD to 20 toes. [Apologies to glamorous assistant Frances, who didn’t fit the song!] We’re all familiar with Little Swinger and Nasty Nips passing through pack in full verbal flow week on week, but tonight they had serious challengers with the return of Granny Muff, and visitor Premature Cocksucker who know each other from hashing in Spain. Never let the truth etc, so they downed to ‘A Frenchman Went to the Lavatory’, before being congratulated on the World Cup and the revelation that Argentina were again being investigated by FIFA for Falklands gestures after having no shots on target in the final! Fukarwe was called next after Wilds Thing unhesitatingly nominated him without a charge, joined by Ride-It, Baby for the usual FH call. After a misunderstanding on the weekends Chichester H3 hangover trail, she had twice returned through pack without marks in penance. Sometimes a punishment, sometimes a prize, they both downed to ‘They’re Alright’ before SOE was called for misleading pack, and revealed that he’d been mis-fingered and it was in fact Fukarwe, earning his downer after all. But SOE wasn’t blameless as he and WT had exchanged some single-entendre banter in the woods, which made it quite amusing that my phone notes had corrected him to Shorts Off Early. And finally, having told me last week that this week was his last week before heading home, Just George revealed that he will be around next week. But he’s had a beer every week so we sang Goodbye-ee anyway, and NN can sort that one out!

Admin included a call for hare on the awkward bank holiday Monday 31st August, and announcement of the AGPU on Saturday 8th August at 2pm (please eat before), then OOD wrapped circle up with an enthusiastic thank you to us all for coming and the hash for keeping us all going, mentioning those 80+ and still here such as Local Knowledge and Psychlepath as well as absent friends.
